Audrey Werner

Audrey Irene Mercer Werner, age 92, of Austin, Texas, formerly of Texas City, died Sunday, August 27th at her home in Longhorn Village.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, September 9, 2017 at First United Methodist Church in Texas City, the Rev. Jeremy Wester officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock. Visitation will be held 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Friday, September 8, 2017 at Emken-Linton Funeral Home in Texas City.

Born July 14, 1925 in London England, Audrey had many stories to tell of her life before and during WWII. One in particular was of a handsome young Army Sargent named Eddie Werner whom she met at the USO in London. They fell in love and after a two-year courtship were married April 8, 1944. Soon after their wedding Sgt. Werner got paperwork in order to send his Bride to the United States so that she would be safe from the war. But before all the paperwork was complete, D-Day had occurred and Sgt. Werner was sent to France. The day after Eddie left England, his brother Eugene arrived with the United States Army Airforce and Eugene helped to complete the paperwork. So, in March 1945 Audrey found herself on the Mauretania, a luxury liner that had been outfitted as a troop ship, being transported to the States along with wounded soldiers. She landed in New York harbor, boarded a train to Galveston Texas where she lived with Eddie's parents and awaited his return from the war.

Audrey devoted her life to her Husband and daughters Pamela and Shirley. She was a 65-year member of the First United Methodist Church in Texas City where she was a member of The Philathea Class and United Methodist Women. In addition, she was a 50 plus year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Audrey loved watching football, baseball and golf and everyone would tell you she had a great sense of humor. She knitted beautifully, loved to travel, and play games - Mexican Train being one of her favorites. Her two Granddaughters, Courtney Compton and Emily Rodgers, were a special joy to her as well as her three great grandchildren Cooper Compton, Ella Rodgers and Denton Rodgers.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Edwin Lamar Werner; her parents, Kate and Ernest Mercer; her sisters, Dorothy Britton and Doris Slack and her brother John Mercer.

Survivors include daughters, Pamela Gann and husband Allen of Fort Worth, Shirley Werner and husband Donald Abrams of Austin; granddaughters, Courtney Compton and husband Brian of Kerrville, and Emily Rodgers and husband Keith of Plano and the three great grandchildren.

The Family would like to thank Rose and Marion Godeaux and their family for their love and care through the years. They are a part of the family. We also want to thank Longhorn Village in Austin where Mother was happy and at home for the last two years. And finally, our thanks to Guiding Hospice who saw Mother and the family through her last days.

In lieu of flowers, Mother would ask that you donate to the charity of your choice - but if you need a suggestion - one of her favorites was The Salvation Army.
