Barbara Austin

Barbara Gray McFarlane Austin was born in Galveston, Texas on November 7, 1917 and graduated from Ball High School. She and Grafton T. Austin Jr. were married in Trinity Episcopal Church in Galveston in November 1939.

A memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 16, 2016 at St. Michaels Episcopal Church in La Marque. Burial will follow at Galveston memorial Park.

The family moved to La Marque in 1950. Barbara and Grafton were founding members of St. Michael's Church in La Marque. Barbara remained active in the church for many years. An avid reader and life-long learner, she took numerous courses at the College of the Mainland. To assist others, she established the Barbara and Grafton Austin scholarship at COM in 2005.

She died on July 7, and is survived by 3 children: Barbara Elaine Austin, Thomas Norman Austin, and Annette Austin Figueroa. She was preceded in death by her husband and also her son, Grafton T. Austin III.

She was a loving and generous grandmother to her 9 grandchildren, Gant and Stephen Austin; Jon Goldfoot and Jeanne Goldfoot Hogan; Graham Austin and Stacy Austin Egan; and Julian and Elena Figueroa, and Amanda Figueroa Anthony; and her five great-grandchildren, Hannah and Leah Austin; Skyler and Kate Hogan; and Callen Austin.

Barbara engaged in volunteer work at her church and at several hospitals and enjoyed playing bridge regularly with her long-time friends. The family especially wants to thank Wayne and Charlotte Moore, Janet Dowdy, Sandy Hofstetter, Sally Austin, and Korie Wright for their devotion to Barbara.
