On July 11, 2018, Derek Allen Warren of Texas City passed from this life into the next after a long struggle and complications following heart surgery. Derek was born with the spiritual heart of a warrior but without the physical heart to match. He loved sports and could have been the G.O.A.T ("Greatest of All Time") in any chosen sport, would his body allow.
He worked hard, had a full and rewarding life, loved and was loved by anyone who got to know him, and refused to give up. He knew his purpose was to show others how to live and he fulfilled it.
Derek lived most of his early years in Indialantic Florida and maintained close friendships and lasting bonds with childhood friends. He relocated to Texas City in middle school with his mother to be closer to extended family including the Hoover and Hancock branches of the family to whom Derek was one of their own. He graduated from Texas City High School and Sam Houston State University.
God took Derek's mother, Sara Hoover Warren, a year prior to his heart surgery and its subsequent complications, answering her prayer to "go before Derek does". He is survived by his father Charles Warren, sister Andrea Barrett, brothers Chuck and Drew Warren, nephews Eric and Treat, nieces Alex, Tasha, Hayley and Cherie Ann, great-nephews Ethan and James, great-nieces Carter and Eleanor, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and his beloved dog Chuck.
To his great-nephews and nieces, Derek will be fondly remembered as Uncle "Mojo". And to all those fortunate enough to have known Derek, he will always be the G.O.A.T.
