Edith Williams

Edith C. Williams, 98, former longtime resident of Texas City, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Serenity Haven in Tomball, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Monday, July 11, at EmkenLinton Funeral Home. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to noon on Monday. Interment will be in the family plot in Drumright, Oklahoma.

Mrs. Williams was born on a farm near Stroud, Oklahoma to Lugertie Sutton Cook and Ortha Thomas Cook. She grew up in the oil boomtown of Drumright, Oklahoma. After graduating from high school, she attended Oklahoma State University where she majored in English and Spanish. During WWII, she worked in the Office of Censorship in Laredo, Texas where she censored letters coming in from Hispanic soldiers. After the war, she began her 40year teaching career. She touched the lives of many students at Drumright High School in Drumright, Oklahoma, Alamo Elementary Island Rural School in Galveston, Texas and Blocker Junior High School in Texas City before retiring in 1978. She was awarded an Outstanding Teacher Award in 1972.

In addition to her dedication to education, she was active in the community and many professional organizations. She was a member of the Business and Professional Womens Club charter member Delta Kappa Gamma 50yr charter member TC Heritage Club Texas City Study Club and Mainland Retired Teachers.

While maintaining her professional career and activities in the community and organizations, she was still able to manage a household as a single Mom, juggling the schedule of three children all involved in different activities and interests. She was a wonderful Mother, devoted to her family, and was honored as such in 1962 as Galveston Countys Mother of the Year.

She is preceded in death by her daughter Carolyn Ann Williams Jones and her son Charles Thomas Williams.

She is survived by her daughter Eileen Williams granddaughter, Emily A. Doucet and husband Brian grandsons, Steven A. Jones and wife Natalie and Michael A. Jones greatgranddaughters, Adrianna Acevado and Kyleanne Jones greatgrandsons, Israel Michael and Carter Andrew Jones four nephews and their families.

Mrs. Williams never met a stranger. She was loved and respected by her family and many, many friends who will miss her dearly.
