Edward Sauer

Edward Raymond Sauer, 87, born in Galveston December 21, 1928 and a long-time resident of Texas City, passed away Saturday, September 24, 2016 in Bayou Vista.

After starting his first job as a paper boy when he was nine years old, Ed worked various places around Galveston including Rex Laundry, Wrights Drug Stores, State Theatre and Houston Light & Power before joining the military right out of Ball High School. Ed joined the Marine Corp in July 1946 and received his basic training at Camp Pendleton in California and later at El Toro Marine Air Station, Santa Ana, Ca. As a reservist, he was activated in September 1950 with the First Marine Air Wing to join in the Korean War effort. Released from active duty in 1953, Ed returned to the Galveston Marine Reserve Unit which became the Third Amtrack Company. His final military assignment was as Gunnery Sergeant 3rd. Amtracs, USMCR, Galveston, Texas.

After release from active military service, Ed hired in at Union Carbide where he worked as an Operator, Chief Operator and Instrument Technician. He retired from Carbide in March, 1984.

In 1956 Ed Passed his FCC exam for Amateur Radio License and was issued callsign K5YYD. He was a Charter Member of the Tidelands Amateur Radio Society. His primary "ham" interest was public service beginning with the Red Cross in Hurricane Carla in 1961. Ed also volunteered 10 years as the local Red Cross Disaster Communication Director and 10 years as Radio Officer Galveston County Civil Defense. The last 6 years of his volunteer time was devoted to the National Weather Service in League City assisting with training and set up of the National Weather Service Skywarn Program.

Preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Doris Miller Sauer and his daughter, Sandra Jean Sauer Rehm, Ed is survived by 2 daughters, Connie Sauer and Judy Steffens. He also leaves 2 grandchildren Jimi Casey and Becky McElroy and 2 great grandchildren Kannon Casey and Kelly Casey.

Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 29th at Emken-Linton Funeral Home in Texas City followed at 11:00 a.m. with the funeral service. Burial will be at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster.
