Hattie Johnson

Hattie McNulty Johnson, a lifelong resident of Texas City, passed away on July 28, 2011 at Mainland Medical Center Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 3, at St Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in Texas City with Father Tom Ponzini officiating. Burial will follow at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock. Visitation will be 5 7 p.m., Tuesday, August 2, at EmkenLinton Funeral Home, with a Rosary beginning at 7 p.m.

Hattie was born to Harry and Mamie McNulty in Franklin, Louisiana, on February 28, 1921. She celebrated her 90th birthday earlier this year. She came, while a very young child, with her parents and siblings to Texas City in the 1920s from Louisiana because her father had a job at the sugar refinery in Texas City, thus making her a member of one of the oldest families in Texas City.

Hattie and Bill Johnson were married in 1941, their only child was born in 1944. Their son contracted polio sometime before 1946, and they were living at Third Avenue Villas in 1947 when the Texas City Disaster destroyed parts of the city. This was a lot for a young married couple to deal with in just a few years time span.

Hattie spent many days each year, for over 14 years, taking her son to John SealyUTMB hospital in Galveston for physical therapy and special braces and shoes. Many people in town will remember Hattie from the years she worked at Agees Drug Store and later, at Floyds Pharmacy, where she made many friends. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in Texas City.

Hattie was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, W. G. Bill Johnson her parents Harry and Mamie her sisters Pearl, Rosina, Nell, and Mabel and brothers Jessie, Louis, and Justin.

She is survived by her son, William J. Bill Johnson, a retired Texas City High School teacher her sister, Barbara Miller, of McKinney, Texas and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

Hatties compassion, kindness, and concern for others throughout her life was amazing. She was always ready to help another in any way she could never, ever expecting anything in return.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Mainland Medical Center, especially the wonderful nursing staff in the Intensive Care Unit and the second floor postop nurses.
