Irene Monk, 95, of Texas City passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Mainland Medical Center.

Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 2017 at First Baptist Church Texas City with the funeral to follow at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Dennis Johns officiating. Interment will be at a later date.

Irene M. Monk was born October 1, 1922 in San Angelo Texas. She graduated from Lakeview High School. Her first job was at San Angelo public library and later at Goodfellow Air Force Base San Angelo Texas. Irene concluded her working career at American National Insurance Company from which she retired.

Irene love to travel and see new places. She traveled to Colorado to visit an aunt only to find another San Angelo resident was there too. Soon after she married John H. Monk Jr. on December 7, 1943 and her life of travel truly began. As a service wife, she traveled to many bases throughout the United States and overseas. When J.H. left the service she along with four children continued to explore the different areas of the United States. They finally settled in Texas City in 1970.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Texas City and enjoyed her membership with the Triple L Group. She enjoyed working with the "Brown Bag" ministry to families at the UTMB Cancer Center. Her greatest joy was helping others and it was contagious, if you were around, you were soon helping too. Her fondest memories were of the many trips that group had taken together. She was a member of the Sunshine Sunday School group and acted as secretary for many years.

She is preceded in death by her husband, J. H. Monk Jr., his parents, John H. and Eva Monk. Her parents, Elmer and Treaty Cole; brother, John Cole and wife Claudia, and brother, Lawrence Cole and wife Lucille; granddaughter, Phyllis Stewart and beloved brother-in-law's Troy Vines, Henry Caston and Donald Mason.

Her legacy lives on through her four children, daughter, Beverly Stewart and husband Donald of San Angelo Texas, daughter, Margaret Lutz and husband Dan of Ontonagon, Michigan, son, John Lawrence Monk and wife Jan of Cleburne, Texas, daughter, Joy Coffey and husband Russ of Dickinson Texas; grandchildren, Christie Pippin and husband Wally of Grandview Texas, Wayne Stewart and wife Chrissy of Odessa Texas, Keith Stewart and wife Debbie of Plano Texas, James Stewart of Cleburne Texas, Bruce Stewart and wife Dalia of San Angelo Texas, Mike Lutz of Ontonagon, Michigan, Pamela Karttunen and husband Dale of Ontonagon, Michigan, Eric Lutz and wife Shannon of Wakefield Michigan, Bryan Monk and wife Jennifer of Cleburne Texas, Christopher Monk and wife Donna of Cleburne Texas, Jeffrey Monk of Cleburne Texas, Richard Coffey of Fort Richard Alabama and Stephen Coffey of Jackson Michigan. She was also very proud of her 14 great grandsons; 18 great granddaughters; 7 great great grandsons; and 9 great great granddaughters. Irene also discovered that she was to be a great grandmother and a great great grandmother once again in the year 2018.
