Jefferson Dick

Jefferson "Jeff" Davis Dick, 94, of Santa Fe, passed away Saturday, October 28, 2017, in Santa Fe, Texas.

Jeff was born August 23, 1923 in Belcher, Louisiana. He graduated from Texas City High School and then attended Texas A & M University to study Aeronautical Engineering. While he was on the football field playing tag football with friends an announcement was made over the loud speaker saying that Pearl Harbor had been attacked. At the end of the year he left school to take a summer job in Freeport as a journeyman welder making 90 cents an hour. He then joined the Navy in September 1942 and was an Aviation Machinist's Mate. While in the Navy he spent part of his time in Chicago, Kingsville, San Diego and Guam during WWII.

After the service, he returned to Texas City. He worked as an Iron Worker and was a member of the Iron Workers Union. He said that he was an iron worker at Union Carbide while it was being built. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts (Sea Scouts). He was on his way to Galveston for a Sea Scout meeting when he saw the Texas City Explosion and he went back to Texas City to spend the day as a driver for the fire chief.

He later went to Alaska to work for 5 or 6 years during the summers and go home in the winter. The first time he went he took his brother Donny with him and Donny went to work in a gas station while Jeff got a job as an iron worker on various buildings in Anchorage. He helped to establish an iron workers union while there.

Jeff learned how to fly while in Alaska and received his private pilot license for both land and sea. One of the things he enjoyed about flying was being able to spot wildlife from the air.

Jeff was Saved while in Alaska and this was a huge turning point in his life. From that point on his main goal in life was serving Christ. He returned to Texas City and later moved to Santa Fe. He was an active member and elder at Arcadia First Baptist Church of Santa Fe for over 36 years and he spent his life witnessing for the Lord. He did return to Alaska through the years and helped to build churches there.

Jeff is preceded in death by his parents Horace and Eddie Dick; brothers, Edward Dick, Frank Dick and Don Darling Dick.

He is survived by his sister Myrtle Reeves and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.


Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 3, 2017, at Emken-Linton Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Emken-Linton Funeral Home in Texas City. Pallbearers are Jeffery Parish, Charles Parish, Mike Matlock, Keith Dick, John Dick and John Gates
