Obituary

Myrtle Lorene Brewer of Bryan, Texas went to meet her Lord on September 16, 2026. She passed after a weeklong hospital stay at the age of 95.

She left a legacy of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that will miss her very much. Lorene, her preferred name, was born in Thackerville, Oklahoma on February 5, 1931, the youngest of nine children born to Horace and Emma Davenport.

Her family moved frequently with her father chasing job opportunities during the Great Depression, and she finally arrived in Crane, Texas where she married her husband, Tommy Joe McCoy, while still in high school. After five children during 16 years of marriage, she made the difficult decision to leave Tommy Joe to move her family to League City, Texas to live near her sister, Evalean. While there, she met an operating engineer from NASA, Charles Noel Brewer, who married her and moved the family to Texas City, Texas. Never one to shy away from hard work, she held a number of jobs as a waitress and in a meat market, among others, before landing a position at Lipton Tea in Galveston, Texas where she worked 18 years. She left that job to become a fulltime caregiver for Noel, whose health declined until his death in 1985. At that point, she had enough of the work life and chose to travel with her sister and lifelong friends, camping in an RV throughout Texas and nearby states. They continued as a team in bowling leagues, going to Nationals several times, and loved to play cards together.

Lorene is survived by her sons Jeff McCoy (Dee) of Bryan, and Mark McCoy (Eydie) of League City, 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and a few great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Tommy Joe McCoy, Jr (Lana) of Harrah, Oklahoma, her daughter Carmen Avant (Larry) of Texas City, and her son Tim McCoy (Margie) of Palestine, Texas.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from Noon to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon prior to the services.

Funeral services will be held at Emken-Linton Funeral Home in Texas City on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery.
