Wilbur Pettyjohn

Wilbur Eugene "Gene" Pettyjohn of Texas City passed from this life on Monday evening, November 6, 2017.

Gene was born on April 19, 1927 in Three Sands, OK to Charles Mead and Louise Boyer-Pettyjohn both deceased by 1972. The baby of the family, he had three elder brothers, George, Glen, and Howard, also, all now deceased.

Raised in Neodesha, KS until 9th grade, Gene had a nomadic spirit and loved road trips well into his adult-hood. He honored his family and country by serving in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. He was also a member of the Freemasons from 1950 until the day he passed.

He worked for Amoco / Standard Oil of Indiana from 1951 until he retired out of their Texas City, TX branch in 1985. In his retirement, he was known for walking the neighborhood and keeping it clear of cans and debris. He was an avid golfer and golf watcher; whether his eyes were open or not.

He married Wauneitta Starnes of Fredonia, KS on October 12, 1953, and they enjoyed over 34 years together before her passing on December 24, 1987.

He is survived by his children, Martha Jane Pettyjohn and Robert "Bob" Eugene Pettyjohn; his granddaughter, Chandra Elaine Metz; his grandson-in-law, Martin Thomas Metz; his great-grandchildren, Elijah "E.J" Jacob Eugene Dickson and Evelyn "Evie" Ruth Ann Dickson, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
